What is SAP SuccessFactors?
SAP SuccessFactors is a human capital management (HCM) suite delivered as cloud software. Its core is Employee Central, a system of record for employee data, organizational structures, positions, benefits and time off, surrounded by modules for payroll, time tracking, recruiting, onboarding, learning, performance and goals, compensation, succession planning and workforce analytics. Employees and managers use it for self-service tasks such as updating personal details, requesting leave, setting goals and completing training.
The suite is aimed mainly at large and midsize organizations with staff in many countries, and SAP hosts, secures and updates it without requiring customers to run any other SAP system. It connects to SAP’s ERP software, and new workforce planning tools combine data from SAP Cloud ERP, SAP Fieldglass and SuccessFactors so leaders can plan for both employees and contingent workers. SAP said in January 2022 that SuccessFactors had about 12,000 customers and 191 million users in more than 200 countries.
Recent development has focused on recruiting and AI. SAP completed its acquisition of SmartRecruiters in September 2025 and in March 2026 integrated it with the suite as SmartRecruiters for SAP SuccessFactors. At SAP Sapphire in May 2026, SAP introduced Joule Assistants for HR that coordinate AI agents to prepare payroll runs, move candidates from hiring into onboarding and answer employee questions, along with AI-assisted organizational modeling in Employee Central. Related products include SAP S/4HANA for finance and SAP Concur for employee travel and expenses.
