What is SAP S/4HANA?
SAP S/4HANA is an enterprise resource planning system: a single application that records and connects a company’s financial accounting, controlling, procurement, inventory, manufacturing, sales, service and asset management. A purchase order, the goods receipt that follows it and the resulting accounting entry all update the same database immediately, so finance teams can close the books faster and managers can see current figures without waiting for overnight batch jobs. The name stands for SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA, because the software runs only on SAP’s in-memory database, SAP HANA.
Moving to HANA let SAP simplify the data model inherited from its older ERP software. Many aggregate and index tables disappeared, and the Universal Journal combines financial and management accounting line items in one table. Users work mainly through SAP Fiori, a set of role-based apps that run in a web browser, and industry versions add processes for sectors such as utilities, retail, oil and gas, automotive and the public sector. Companies coming from older SAP systems can convert an existing installation, start fresh with a new implementation or migrate selected data.
SAP now markets S/4HANA as part of SAP Cloud ERP. History of SAP S/4HANA
SAP’s ERP software dates back to 1973, when the young company completed its first real-time financial accounting program. It evolved through the R/2 mainframe system of 1981 and the client-server R/3 system of 1992, and R/3 later became SAP ERP Central Component (ECC), the core of the SAP Business Suite.
SAP first moved its Business Suite onto the HANA database in 2013 and then introduced S/4HANA on February 3, 2015, as a new suite written for HANA, with a cloud edition following later that year. Adoption took time because migrations from heavily customized ECC systems can run for years, so in 2020 SAP set the end of 2027 as the end of mainstream maintenance for ECC, with optional extended maintenance through 2030, and in 2021 it launched RISE with SAP to bundle cloud software, infrastructure and migration services. In 2025 and 2026 SAP increasingly sold the cloud editions under the SAP Cloud ERP name and added AI agents through Joule.
