What is SAP Concur?

SAP Concur automates the paperwork around employee spending. Concur Expense lets employees photograph receipts, import corporate card charges and submit expense reports from a phone or browser, then routes the reports to managers and checks them against company policy before reimbursement. Concur Travel is a corporate booking tool for flights, hotels, rail and rental cars that applies travel policies and negotiated rates, and Concur Invoice captures supplier invoices and routes them for approval and payment.

Because bookings, card transactions and expense claims flow into one system, finance teams can audit spending, catch duplicate or suspicious claims, manage tax and value-added tax reclaims and send approved costs to accounting systems. SAP Concur connects closely with SAP’s ERP software but also integrates with other products, including NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero and ADP, and its TripIt app organizes travelers’ itineraries. Plans range from basic expense reporting for small businesses to global travel and expense programs for large enterprises.

SAP has been adding AI throughout the service. Joule, SAP’s AI assistant, debuted in SAP Concur solutions at the Concur Fusion conference in March 2025, and in 2026 SAP connected Joule with Microsoft 365 Copilot so employees can submit expenses and book travel without leaving Microsoft apps. Two new AI agents that draft expense reports automatically and audit receipts before submission entered early adopter testing in 2026, and SAP Concur and American Express Global Business Travel jointly offer Complete, a combined booking, payment and expense service.

History of SAP Concur

Concur was founded in 1993 by Mike Hilton and brothers Rajeev and Steve Singh to automate the expense reporting process. The company says it was the first to offer expense reporting as a service and the first to build an integrated travel and expense platform, and it expanded through acquisitions including the itinerary app TripIt and, in 2016, the travel search startup Hipmunk.

SAP agreed in September 2014 to buy Concur Technologies for $8.3 billion and completed the deal that December, describing it as the largest acquisition of a software-as-a-service company to that point. The business kept its base in Bellevue, Washington, became SAP Concur and has been tied more closely to SAP’s procurement and finance software over time, sharing AI features through Joule since 2025.
