What is ServiceNow AI Platform?

ServiceNow AI Platform is the foundation that every ServiceNow product runs on. It provides a common data model, a configuration management database, workflow and integration tools, reporting, security controls and a user interface layer, and ServiceNow builds its applications for IT, customer service, HR, security, legal, procurement and finance on top of it. Because those applications share one platform, a single request can move between departments, such as an employee onboarding that triggers HR tasks, laptop provisioning and account creation.

Customers also build their own applications on the platform with low-code tools, and ServiceNow groups its products into technology, CRM and industry, core business and creator workflows. Unlike many cloud services that mix customers in one shared database, ServiceNow gives each customer a dedicated application and database instance, a multi-instance design it has used since its early years. New features arrive in twice-yearly releases named alphabetically after places, such as Yokohama and Zurich in 2025.

AI now shapes most of the platform’s development. Now Assist adds generative AI for summarizing, drafting and code generation, AI agents carry out multistep tasks, and AI Control Tower gives companies one place to govern agents and models from ServiceNow and other vendors. In 2026 ServiceNow launched ServiceNow Otto, a single assistant that combines Now Assist with technology from its Moveworks acquisition, and Action Fabric, which lets ServiceNow and third-party AI take action through platform workflows. The platform’s best-known application remains ServiceNow IT Service Management.

Key features of ServiceNow AI Platform

  1. 01

    Shared data model and CMDB

All ServiceNow applications share one data model, including a configuration management database that maps a company’s services, applications and infrastructure, so records created in one workflow are available to others.

  2. 02

    Workflow automation

Flow Designer and Workflow Studio let administrators automate multistep processes with approvals, conditions and notifications, while IntegrationHub connects those flows to third-party systems through prebuilt connectors.

  3. 03

    Low-code app development

App Engine gives professional and citizen developers visual builders, templates and scripting to create custom applications that inherit the platform’s security, data and workflow capabilities.

  4. 04

    Now Assist generative AI

Now Assist summarizes cases and incidents, drafts responses and knowledge articles, generates code and flows from text prompts, and answers employee questions in natural language.

  5. 05

AI agents and AI Control Tower

AI agents complete multistep tasks inside workflows, and AI Control Tower provides a central place to govern, monitor and manage AI agents and models from ServiceNow and other vendors.

  6. 06

    Workflow Data Fabric

Connectors and zero-copy integrations let workflows and AI agents use data held in external data platforms and business applications without first copying it into ServiceNow.

  7. 07

    Multi-instance architecture

Each customer runs on its own dedicated application and database instance rather than a shared one, which isolates customer data and lets organizations choose where their instance is hosted.

  8. 08

    ServiceNow Otto

Launched in 2026, Otto combines Now Assist, Moveworks and other AI experiences into one assistant that employees use to find answers and complete work across departments and connected systems.

Who uses ServiceNow AI Platform?

  • IT departments run service desks, change approvals, asset tracking and IT operations monitoring on a single system of record.
  • Customer service organizations route cases, field service appointments and customer requests between front-office and back-office teams.
  • HR, legal, finance and procurement teams automate employee requests such as onboarding, contract reviews and purchase approvals.
  • Enterprises build custom workflow applications with low-code tools instead of maintaining separate homegrown systems.
  • Security teams combine asset visibility from Armis, identity data from Veza and AI governance tools to manage cyber risk across the organization.

History of ServiceNow AI Platform

The platform traces back to Glidesoft, the company Fred Luddy incorporated in 2004 to build business applications that ran in a web browser. Its first widely used application handled IT service management, and the company took the name Service-now.com in 2006. When ServiceNow went public in 2012, it highlighted the multi-instance architecture that gives every customer a dedicated database.

As customers used the software for more than IT, ServiceNow promoted it as a general workflow platform under the Now Platform name and added products for security, customer service, HR and low-code development. It introduced Now Assist generative AI in 2023 and AI agents in 2025, the year it began calling the product the ServiceNow AI Platform and introduced AI Control Tower. In 2026 it launched ServiceNow Otto and Action Fabric after completing acquisitions of Moveworks, Veza and Armis.
