What is HubSpot Smart CRM?
HubSpot Smart CRM is the shared database behind all of HubSpot’s products. It stores records for contacts, companies, deals, support tickets and custom objects, and it logs emails, calls, meetings, form submissions and website visits on a single timeline for each customer. Sales teams manage deals through visual pipelines, while marketing, service and finance teams work from the same records in HubSpot Marketing Hub and HubSpot’s other hubs.
The free version of the CRM has been central to HubSpot’s growth strategy since 2014. Small businesses can track contacts and deals, schedule meetings, send tracked emails and build simple forms without paying, then upgrade as they grow. Paid editions add sales automation, forecasting, custom reports, permissions and data quality tools, and a marketplace of third-party apps connects the CRM to other business software.
HubSpot has recast the product around AI. The CRM enriches records with company data, building on HubSpot’s 2023 acquisition of the B2B data provider Clearbit, and the Breeze Assistant can research accounts, prepare sellers for calls and summarize customer histories. In September 2026 HubSpot introduced a self-updating version of the Smart CRM that captures calls, emails and meetings automatically, along with a Context Home that scores how complete a company’s customer data is. The CRM competes with Salesforce and Zoho CRM.

Breeze Assistant
An AI assistant built into the CRM researches companies, prepares sellers for calls and summarizes records, and since 2026 it can assign work to HubSpot’s AI agents based on plain-language requests.
- 06

Prebuilt and custom reports show pipeline, activity and revenue data, and dashboards combine information from marketing, sales and service teams in one view.

History of HubSpot Smart CRM
HubSpot started as a marketing software company and for its first years offered integrations with outside CRM systems such as Salesforce rather than a full CRM of its own. In 2014 it introduced HubSpot CRM as a free product that businesses could use on its own or with HubSpot’s marketing software, and the CRM became the base on which the company later built its sales and customer service products.
The free CRM became central to HubSpot’s freemium strategy of attracting small businesses and upgrading them over time. HubSpot acquired Clearbit in December 2023 to enrich CRM records with company data, and by early 2024 it was describing the product as the Smart CRM, the foundation of what it calls its customer platform. Breeze AI followed later in 2024, and at its UNBOUND conference in September 2026 HubSpot launched a self-updating Smart CRM designed to reduce manual data entry.
