What is Autodesk Maya?

Autodesk Maya is a 3D content creation application used to build and animate characters, environments and visual effects. Artists model objects with polygons, subdivision surfaces and NURBS curves, rig characters with skeletons and deformers, and animate them with keyframes, motion capture data or procedural systems. Scenes can be rendered with Arnold, the ray-tracing renderer included with Maya, or exported to game engines such as Unreal Engine.

Maya is built around a node graph that records how every object and effect in a scene is constructed, which makes the program highly customizable. Studios extend it with scripts written in MEL, Maya’s own scripting language, or in Python, and many large productions build their pipelines around it. Simulation tools handle cloth, hair, particles and fluids, and the Bifrost framework creates procedural effects such as smoke, fire and water.

Recent versions add AI and pipeline features. MotionMaker, a generative animation system, produces movement for human and dog characters and, since Maya 2027 arrived in March 2026, for horses as well, while new tools help artists build assets in Universal Scene Description (USD), a file standard widely used by visual effects studios. Autodesk also sells Maya Creative, a streamlined version with pay-as-you-go pricing for smaller studios. Maya’s main competitors include Blender, SideFX Houdini and Autodesk’s own 3ds Max.

Key features of Autodesk Maya

  1. 01

    Polygon and NURBS modeling

Tools for polygon, subdivision surface and NURBS modeling, including the Smart Bevel added in Maya 2027, let artists build everything from hard-surface props to organic characters.

  2. 02

    Rigging and animation

Skeletons, skinning tools, constraints and deformers prepare characters for animation, and the graph editor, time editor and motion capture tools give animators fine control over movement.

  3. 03

    MotionMaker

A generative AI animation tool creates natural movement for human, dog and horse characters from simple path and style inputs, which animators can then refine by hand.

  4. 04

    Simulation and effects

Bifrost, nCloth, nHair and particle systems simulate liquids, smoke, fire, cloth and hair for visual effects shots and animated productions.

  5. 05

    Arnold rendering

Arnold for Maya, a physically based ray tracer, renders film-quality images with realistic lighting, materials and motion blur on CPUs or GPUs.

  6. 06

    Scripting and pipeline integration

MEL and Python scripting, a C++ API and support for formats such as USD, Alembic and FBX let studios automate tasks and connect Maya to their production pipelines.

Who uses Autodesk Maya?

  • Visual effects studios create digital creatures, environments and destruction effects for feature films and streaming series.
  • Animation studios model, rig and animate characters for animated features, television shows and short films.
  • Game developers build and animate characters and props before exporting them to real-time game engines.
  • Advertising and design studios produce 3D product visualizations and animated sequences for commercials.

History of Autodesk Maya

Maya grew out of the graphics software businesses of Alias Research and Wavefront Technologies, which Silicon Graphics acquired in 1995 and merged into a subsidiary called Alias|Wavefront. The combined company released Maya 1.0 in February 1998. Walt Disney Feature Animation worked closely with the developers while using Maya on the film Dinosaur, and its demands for a customizable interface helped shape the program’s open architecture.

Alias|Wavefront received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement for Maya in 2003, after it was used on films such as The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Spider-Man. Autodesk agreed to buy Alias in October 2005 and completed the acquisition in January 2006, after which it developed Maya alongside its other media and entertainment products, including 3ds Max and MotionBuilder.

Autodesk Maya: frequently asked questions

Who owns Autodesk Maya?

Autodesk Maya is owned and developed by Autodesk, the San Francisco design software company. Autodesk gained Maya when it bought Alias, the software’s original developer, in a deal announced in October 2005 and completed in January 2006. Maya was first released in 1998 by Alias|Wavefront, then part of Silicon Graphics.

What is Autodesk Maya used for?

Autodesk Maya is used to create 3D animation, visual effects and digital assets. Film and television studios use it for creatures, characters and effects, animation studios for modeling and rigging characters, and game developers for building and animating models before exporting them to a game engine.

Is Autodesk Maya free?

Autodesk Maya is not free for commercial use and is sold by monthly or annual subscription. Autodesk offers a discounted Maya Indie subscription for artists and small studios under a revenue limit, a streamlined Maya Creative option with pay-as-you-go pricing, a free trial and free educational access for students and educators.

When was Autodesk Maya released?

Maya 1.0 was released in February 1998 by Alias|Wavefront. Autodesk acquired the product in 2006 through its purchase of Alias and continues to release annual versions, including Maya 2027, which arrived in March 2026.

What is the difference between Maya and 3ds Max?

Both are 3D graphics programs from Autodesk. Maya is most closely associated with character animation, rigging and visual effects for film and games, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. 3ds Max runs only on Windows and is widely used for architectural visualization, modeling and game art.
