What is AutoCAD?

AutoCAD is a general-purpose drafting program for producing accurate technical drawings. Users draw lines, arcs, polylines and hatch patterns at exact coordinates, organize them on layers, add dimensions and annotations, and arrange views on sheet layouts for printing or PDF output. Its native DWG file format became a common way to exchange drawings across the architecture, engineering and construction industries, and many other CAD programs read and write it.

Beyond 2D drafting, AutoCAD can model 3D solids, surfaces and meshes, and subscriptions include specialized toolsets for architecture, mechanical design, electrical controls, MEP, plant design and mapping. Firms automate repetitive work with AutoLISP, a dialect of the Lisp language built into the program since the mid-1980s, or with .NET and other programming interfaces. AutoCAD LT is a lower-cost edition focused on 2D drafting and documentation.

Recent releases add cloud collaboration and AI assistance. AutoCAD 2027, released in March 2026, lets several people work in the same DWG file at the same time, includes access to Autodesk’s Forma data management tools and adds an AI-powered Autodesk Assistant for in-product help, along with a Geometry Cleanup tool that finds and repairs drawing errors. Subscriptions to the desktop program also include the AutoCAD web and mobile apps. Competing drafting tools include BricsCAD and DraftSight, while Revit serves teams that model whole buildings.

History of AutoCAD

AutoCAD began as Interact, a CAD program written by Mike Riddle, which Autodesk’s founders acquired rights to and rewrote in 1982. Autodesk showed it at the COMDEX trade show in Las Vegas in November 1982 and shipped it in December, first for CP/M systems and soon afterward for the IBM PC. Bringing drafting from expensive minicomputers and workstations to relatively cheap personal computers made AutoCAD a commercial success and paid for Autodesk’s early growth.

AutoCAD gained a Windows version in 1993 and returned to the Mac in 2010, when Autodesk also released its first iOS app, with Android following in 2011. Autodesk stopped selling new perpetual AutoCAD licenses in January 2016, making the product subscription-only, and added the Flex pay-as-you-go option in 2021. It continues to release a new version each year, most recently AutoCAD 2027 in March 2026.
