What is Unreal Engine?
Unreal Engine is a set of tools for building interactive 3D worlds that render in real time. Developers assemble levels in the Unreal Editor, write gameplay code in C++ or connect it visually with Blueprints, a node-based scripting system, and package the finished project for PCs, consoles, phones and virtual reality headsets. Epic makes the engine’s C++ source code available to registered users on GitHub, so studios can modify the engine itself rather than working only through its public interfaces.
Unreal Engine 5, released in April 2022, introduced two systems that changed how detailed scenes are built. Nanite, a virtualized geometry system, renders pixel-scale detail and very high object counts by streaming only what each frame needs, and Lumen calculates global illumination and reflections dynamically, so lighting responds immediately to changes without precomputed lightmaps. The engine also includes MetaHuman tools for realistic digital characters, animation and physics systems, and access to Quixel’s scanned assets through the Fab marketplace.
Although it began as a game engine, Unreal is now used well beyond games. Television productions such as The Mandalorian have used it to render virtual sets on LED walls, architects and carmakers use it for visualization, and Ford’s seventh-generation Mustang uses it for its digital instrument cluster and touchscreen. It also powers Fortnite, whose Unreal Editor for Fortnite lets creators build games with Epic’s Verse programming language. In May 2026 Epic announced Unreal Engine 6, which is meant to bring the main engine and Fortnite’s creation tools together, with early access planned for around late 2027.

History of Unreal Engine
Tim Sweeney began writing the first Unreal Engine in 1995 for Unreal, a first-person shooter Epic released in 1998, and Epic soon began licensing the engine to other studios. Unreal Engine 3 powered Gears of War in 2006, and Unreal Engine 4 added physically based materials and the Blueprints scripting system. In March 2015 Epic made Unreal Engine 4 free to download, replacing upfront license fees with a 5 percent royalty on game revenue, which opened the engine to independent developers.
Unreal Engine 5 was revealed in May 2020 and released in April 2022 with Nanite and Lumen. Epic released Unreal Editor for Fortnite in March 2023, launched the Fab marketplace in October 2024 and introduced per-seat pricing for larger companies using the engine outside games. On May 24, 2026, Epic Games officially announced Unreal Engine 6, naming Rocket League as the first announced game to move to it, and later said early access should arrive around late 2027.
