What is Dota 2?
Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game in which two teams of five, the Radiant and the Dire, try to destroy a large structure called the Ancient inside the opposing base. Each player controls one hero from a roster of more than 120, each with distinct abilities, and grows stronger during the match by earning gold and experience and buying items. Three lanes, a jungle full of neutral creeps and the boss monster Roshan make matches a contest of strategy, map control and coordination that usually lasts between 30 minutes and an hour.
Dota 2 does not sell gameplay advantages. Every hero is available free from the start, and Valve makes money from cosmetic items, treasures and the Dota Plus subscription, which adds hero progression rewards, match statistics and build suggestions. The game is known for its steep learning curve, and Valve reshapes the map, items and heroes in large gameplay patches. Community creators use the Workshop Tools to make cosmetics and custom game modes, one of which, Dota Auto Chess, inspired Valve’s spinoff Dota Underlords.
In 2015 Dota 2 became the first game to run on Valve’s Source 2 engine, which later powered Counter-Strike 2. Its esports scene centers on The International, Valve’s annual world championship, whose crowdfunded prize pool peaked at about $40 million in 2021. After Valve ended its Dota Pro Circuit league system in 2023, prize pools became much smaller, but The International has continued each year; Team Spirit won the 2026 edition in Shanghai, becoming the first team to win the event three times.

History of Dota 2
Dota 2 descends from Defense of the Ancients, a Warcraft III mod first created in 2003 by a designer known as Eul and later led by the pseudonymous designer IceFrog. Valve hired IceFrog in 2009 to build a standalone sequel, showed it at Gamescom in August 2011 alongside the first International tournament and ran a long beta before releasing the game for Windows on July 9, 2013. A trademark dispute with Blizzard over the Dota name was settled in 2012, leaving Valve free to use it commercially.
In 2015 the Dota 2 Reborn update moved the game to Source 2. Valve introduced the Dota Plus subscription in 2018, worked with Netflix on the animated series Dota: Dragon’s Blood in 2021 and ended the Dota Pro Circuit after the 2023 season. The International has continued as the game’s premier event, held in Copenhagen in 2024, Hamburg in 2025 and Shanghai in 2026.
