What is Palantir AIP?

Palantir AIP, short for Artificial Intelligence Platform, is the layer that lets organizations use large language models inside the operational systems they run on Palantir Foundry and Palantir Gotham. It gives customers access to commercial, open-source and self-hosted models and connects them to the Palantir Ontology, so a model can read governed business objects, such as orders, aircraft or patients, and use approved actions as tools instead of working only with text.

Builders use AIP to create AI functions, agents and automations. In a typical workflow, an agent reviews incoming alerts or documents, proposes a resolution and routes it to a person for approval before any change is written back to the business system. Evaluation tools test AI workflows against defined cases before and after they go into production, security and audit controls govern which data and models each workflow may use, and a library called AIP Now offers ready-made applications and starter packs that customers can install and adapt.

Palantir unveiled AIP in April 2023 and began selling it through bootcamps, intensive sessions lasting a few days in which customer teams build working use cases on their own data. The company’s U.S. commercial revenue has grown rapidly since then, rising 149% year over year in the second quarter of 2026. AIP is also used in defense settings, where CEO Alex Karp has said the system is designed so that AI does not carry out targeting operations without human oversight.

Key features of Palantir AIP

  1. 01

    Model access and choice

AIP connects to commercial, open-source and self-hosted large language models, letting organizations choose a model for each task while keeping data under Palantir’s security and access controls.

  2. 02

    Ontology-grounded agents

Agents read governed objects and use approved actions from the Palantir Ontology as tools, so their answers and proposed changes reflect real business data and rules.

  3. 03

    Logic and automations

Builders combine prompts, data lookups and actions into reusable AI logic that can run on a schedule or in response to events, with human approval steps where required.

  4. 04

    Workflow Builder

A visual workspace shows how AI applications, logic, actions and automations connect, helping builders design, inspect and debug complete workflows.

  5. 05

    Evaluations

End-to-end evaluation tools test AI functions and agents against defined cases, so teams can measure quality before release and keep checking it as models and data change.

  6. 06

    Security and human oversight

Granular controls restrict which data and models each workflow can use, audit logs record activity, and review checkpoints keep people in the loop for consequential actions.

  7. 07

    AIP Now and bootcamps

AIP Now provides pre-built AI applications and builder starter packs that install in one click, and Palantir’s bootcamps help customer teams build their first use cases within days.

Who uses Palantir AIP?

  • Manufacturers use AI agents to triage production and quality alerts and to propose fixes that engineers review and approve.
  • Insurers and banks apply language models to documents, claims and case files while keeping sensitive records under existing access controls.
  • Hospitals build AI-assisted workflows for scheduling, capacity management and clinical operations on top of data already integrated in Foundry.
  • Defense organizations use AIP within Gotham to analyze information and support planning, with human operators retaining decision authority.

History of Palantir AIP

Palantir introduced AIP in April 2023, a few months after the release of ChatGPT set off wide interest in large language models, and presented it as a way to use such models on private networks and sensitive data. A demonstration showed a military operator asking an AI assistant for help planning a response, and Karp said the product would keep humans in control of targeting decisions. In May 2023 he told shareholders that demand for AIP was without precedent.

During 2023 Palantir introduced AIP bootcamps into its sales process, giving prospective customers a way to test the software on their own problems within days, and it later added a Developer Tier and the AIP Now library of ready-made applications. The company has continued to extend AIP with tools for building agents, automations and evaluations, and it hosts an AIPCon conference where customers present their deployments.

Palantir AIP: frequently asked questions

Who makes Palantir AIP?

Palantir AIP is made by Palantir Technologies, the data and AI software company led by CEO Alex Karp. Palantir introduced AIP in April 2023 as its newest major platform, and it works together with the company’s Foundry, Gotham and Apollo platforms.

What is Palantir AIP used for?

Palantir AIP is used to put large language models and AI agents to work on an organization’s own data and processes. Customers use it to review documents, triage alerts, answer operational questions, plan logistics and build AI-assisted applications that include human approval steps.

Is Palantir AIP free?

No. AIP is sold to businesses and government agencies under enterprise contracts, usually together with Foundry or Gotham. Palantir runs bootcamps for prospective customers and offers a Developer Tier that gives limited access to AIP and Foundry in the United States and some other countries.

When was Palantir AIP released?

Palantir unveiled its Artificial Intelligence Platform, AIP, in April 2023 and began deploying it to commercial and government customers that year. It has since added tools for building agents, automations and evaluations, along with a library of pre-built applications.

How is Palantir AIP different from a chatbot?

AIP connects language models to an organization’s Ontology, the model of its real business objects and permitted actions, so AI can look up governed data and propose concrete changes in operational systems. Access controls, audit logs and human review steps govern what the AI is allowed to see and do.
