What is Canva?

Canva is a design editor built around templates. Users pick a format such as an Instagram post, a slide deck, a resume or a poster, choose from a large library of designer-made layouts and customize them by dragging in photos, text, icons, charts and video clips. Designs save to the cloud automatically, and teammates can comment on or edit the same file at the same time.

Over the years Canva has grown from a graphics tool into a broad visual workspace. The same editor now produces presentations, documents, whiteboards, websites, videos and spreadsheets, and Canva Print delivers physical products such as business cards and flyers. Paid plans add brand kits that store a company’s logos, colors and fonts, along with templates that can be locked and approval steps that keep large teams on brand. Designers who need more precise tools can move to Affinity, the free desktop app Canva also makes.

AI features were grouped under the Magic Studio name in 2023 and include tools that write copy, generate images and video, remove backgrounds and turn one design into other formats. In April 2026 Canva released Canva AI 2.0 as a research preview: users describe what they want in a conversation, and the proprietary Canva Design Model produces layered designs that remain fully editable. The same year Canva added an offline mode that lets users keep editing for up to 14 days without an internet connection.

History of Canva

Canva grew out of Fusion Books, a yearbook design service that Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht ran in Perth. After moving to Sydney and recruiting Cameron Adams in 2012, they built a general-purpose editor and opened it to the public in August 2013, when about 20,000 people signed up in the first month, according to the founders. Canva later added mobile apps, printing and paid plans for teams, and in December 2019 it launched Canva for Education as a free product for schools.

The product has since pushed into presentations, video, documents, whiteboards and websites. Canva introduced the Magic Write AI writing tool in December 2022, gathered its AI features under Magic Studio in October 2023, launched Canva Enterprise for large organizations in May 2024 and added Canva Sheets and Canva Code as part of its Visual Suite 2.0 in April 2025. Canva AI 2.0 followed at the company’s Canva Create event in Los Angeles in April 2026.
